Why Less Color Means More Clarity

HorseShoe Bend 2021 on our trip to northern AZ

Yesterday, someone asked me why I post everything in black and white. To be honest, I hadn’t given it much thought beyond the fact that I just love the dramatic look and feel. But then I started to reflect on why I’m drawn to it—and the answer became abundantly clear.

When we look at a black-and-white photograph, something shifts. The story being told within the image changes. Subtle details that may get lost in the vibrancy of color come to life in a black-and-white frame. Suddenly, what was once overlooked becomes the focal point, and the entire narrative shifts.

As someone who’s been fascinated by attention and awareness for years, this reminded me of magicians who can pickpocket right in front of an audience. The performer’s actions are obvious to us as onlookers, but to the person on stage, the trick goes completely unnoticed. It's a perfect example of how attention shapes our experience. What is clear to one person might fly under the radar for someone else.

A black-and-white photograph works the same way. What catches your attention shifts when you strip away the distraction of color. What absorbs your focus, awareness, and interpretation completely changes.

Neither is right or wrong—just like in life, it’s all about where your attention goes. But here’s what’s fascinating: something as simple as removing color can completely transform the mood, vibe, and story of a single moment in time, frozen on a page.

If you are reading this, then you are someone who is driven to reach your full potential, but sometimes you might feel like something is missing—like there’s a hidden layer of clarity just out of reach. Maybe it’s buried beneath the noise of overthinking, comparisons, or mental clutter.

What if you could shift your focus, like turning a color photo into black and white? What new details would emerge? What possibilities would become clear?

Perhaps the answers you’ve been searching for are already there, waiting to be noticed, just beneath the surface.

I’d love to know:
What details are you starting to notice in your life when you strip away the noise?
